For anyone aspiring to work in production, what better way to find out exactly what you could be signing up for by getting to know what we do day to day? Each week, we will follow one of the team as they explain a day in their life. This week we got to know a bit more about Holly Steadman, as our assistant producer she is constantly working on multiple ideas at a time so she must be busy! We follow her in a day of her life to see what this means!
Before Work (07:40- 09:30)
I have to say I’m not a morning person at all, my housemates can attest to this. So I wake up, shower, then make a much needed morning coffee and start getting ready. I like to listen to music in the morning, it helps to wake me up and it just puts you in a good mood to start the day. I love a good book so I’m normally reading on my commute or listening to music and catching up on the news.
Each day is different at Wilson Worldwide because we’re always working on new and exciting ideas. I usually get into the office for 9.30am, make a coffee and catch up on my emails.
I’ll then either carry on developing an idea by researching, writing a treatment or creating a taster tape. We’ll sometimes have meetings to develop an idea further, as the more brains involved the more ideas float around. Other people can think of ideas that you don’t, so it’s always good to work together. We meet with broadcasters and commissioners, exchange ideas and just keep good relationships. We’re constantly checking what’s been commissioned recently, it always amazes me how many ideas we’re working on that have just been commissioned by someone else! So you have to keep yourself updated in the television world or you’ll end up taking a back seat.
Some days we’ll be out filming a taster tape, so it’s usually a mini shoot to get a 3 minute video that teases what the actual show will be like. We meet with all kinds of people who have fascinating stories, and work with them to develop ideas and cater them to different channels. Every day is different here but that’s why I love it!
Evening (17:30- 23:00)
My time spent after work varies on a day-to-day basis. I love going to gigs and seeing live music, the cinema, seeing friends and just doing nothing sometimes. Although doing nothing always involves watching TV, so it never feels like doing nothing as I love watching TV. I love going home to see my family, and my dogs of course!
